Admiral Arthur Phillip RN (1738 – 1814)
On the instructions of Lord Sydney (Home Secretary) Captain Arthur Phillip commanded the First Fleet of convicts, marines and others to establish the colony of New South Wales. Based in the port now known as Sydney Harbour, he became Governor of the colony but subsequently retired to 19 Bennett Street, Bath.
St Nicholas Church contains memorials to Admiral Arthur Phillip and now has an exhibition devoted to the ‘First Fleet.’
